California Audio Labs Tube Analog CD Player with Lamda Transport

California Audio Labs Tube Analog CD Player with Lamda Transport

This is my old CD player, it still plays the disc but the tube section rarely activates, think this is due to the tubes being old. :/ Normally it came on after a few minutes when a relay clicked as the circuitry figured out the tubes had warmed up and the signal was at decent quality...

E/JTAG Cable

E/JTAG Cable

This is a cable i designed to be sold by TCNiSO. Think it still is, along with the BlackCat e/jtag software. The software was a collaborative effort between me, l3x, and engel. I did the backend, l3x did the flash memory plugins and gave me feedback on the backend, and engel created a vb.net frontend. The software is in C++ and was one of my first major OOP projects, thus why it looks like utter hell. The software is all plugin based, and designed to be portable between linux/bsd and windows. The linux version is all command line, while the windows version has a vc.net plugin to allow direct access to alot of the functions for engel's vb.net plugin.

E/JTAG Cable insides

E/JTAG Cable insides

Here is what goes on the inside. a few design points: the board thickness is such that the board barely slides between the DB25 connector's two rows of pins. (Note engel rarely solders these the fit is so tight. Bad bad engel >_> still it should'nt ever really be a problem.) Also the cutest design element is that the board's form factor allows it to be fit inside of the D25 Shell for a clean professional look. :P
Would like to mention that now days most of these are assembled by his lovely nice sweet wife Karley.

Hacking the Cable Modem - The Book!

Hacking the Cable Modem - The Book!

Eventually Der Engel wrote a book on chronicaling our adventures. I served and am credited as the Technical Reviewer. (ooo my name is in print! like omg im soooo famous! ja right!!! :P) Its a decent read, some chapters i like more than others, kinda wish it had loads more technical details but still, next time your in a bookstore or are on amazon.com check it out... XD

Tacky-o-meter

Tacky-o-meter

Long long long ago in early 90's friend asked me if i could make tachometer for his car. Should prolly ramble about how it works, umm, well... despite the name, a tachometer does not measure how tacky something is, instead is supposed to measure the number of times the car's engine revolves every minute and thats related to how many times the car's spark plugs fire which is eazy to detect by wrapping a coil of wire around the spark plug wire because of the nutty amount of voltage needed to generate a spark it puts out alot of electromagnetic energy that the coil picks up creating a signal each time its fired. If u counted the number of times this signal happened a minute and divided by the number of times the spark plug fires for each revolution (this is a constant for each type of motor dependent on the number of cylinders) you get count of RPM! Perfect eh? Notrly cause who wants to wait a minute to get a reading?!? So instead of counting, i measure the amount of time in-between each firing which would be the period of the frequency. Btw frequency = 1/Period.

The microcontroller, usual stuff 8031, eeprom, 74138 3-8 multiplexer for the LED row selects. Each output of the 74138 drives a transistor for the positve side of the LED matrix or selects one of 3 the TI display ICs.

Display board from an old video editing console. The two 6 place displays were from hours, mins, seconds, frames display. This was chopped off with hacky saw and modified to be used as the display for meter.

This is the display board with a driver board. There is a 3 to 8 line decoder IC 74LS156 for positive voltage driving the transistors i left on from the original circuit, and 2 quad AND open colector IC 74LS38 for negative side. together they create a 8 by 8 matrix which is able to drive the 7 segment (and decimal point) display. The microcontroller maps the display as 8 bytes. each bit of each byte corosponds to a individual segment. The code has a 'character set' table that converts an 8bit ascii character code into 8 bits of the display.

Red filter glass pushed into the hole made. Fits nicely eh? There is no glue i just took alot of time measuring and cutting it nice tho is a bit of a bump at top. :/ Note no buttons yet...

This is measuring ppm and pH calibration solutions, u calibrate it to 7.0pH and the 4.0pH then for ppm u first use totally dry probe to set 000 and then 1000ppm calibration solution to set the scale. All this can be done thru the buttons on the front panel (with cute text scrolling effects!) or can be done via serial/usb. Setting via serial/usb you are able to use different value solutions and it calculates eve
